What Is an Intra-Oral Scanner?

An intra-oral scanner is an advanced digital dental technology that creates highly accurate 3D images of a patient’s teeth, gums, and oral structures without the need for traditional impression materials. Instead of using messy trays filled with impression material, the scanner uses a small handheld device to capture thousands of detailed images and combine them into a precise digital model of the mouth.

At Cape Coral Dentistry, Dr. Wesley Nelson uses intra-oral scanning technology to improve accuracy, comfort, and efficiency during a variety of dental procedures, including crowns, bridges, veneers, Invisalign® treatment, dental implants, and restorative care. These digital impressions allow Dr. Nelson to create a clearer understanding of each patient’s smile and develop treatment plans that are customized to their unique dental needs. For patients in Cape Coral, intra-oral scanning provides a more comfortable and modern approach to achieving healthy, beautiful results.

Eliminates Uncomfortable Traditional Impressions

Many patients find traditional dental impressions uncomfortable because of the trays and impression materials used to capture the shape of their teeth. An intra-oral scanner provides a more comfortable alternative by digitally capturing the mouth without the need for messy materials.

Improves Accuracy for Dental Restorations

Digital scans create highly detailed images of the teeth and surrounding tissues, helping Dr. Wesley Nelson design restorations with improved precision. This technology supports the creation of crowns, bridges, veneers, and implant restorations that are designed to fit comfortably and function naturally.

Provides a Preview of Treatment Outcomes

Intra-oral scanning allows patients to see a digital representation of their teeth and better understand their treatment options. For cosmetic and restorative procedures, these images help patients visualize proposed changes and make more informed decisions about their smiles.

I highly recommend this dental office! I’ve been going here for many years and have never been disappointed! They are a small private practice so they really get to know you (they literally ask how my dog is doing by name) and you feel comfortable the second you walk in the door. Everyone is so friendly and professional, from reception to the dental hygienists to the doctor and his assistants! Always very honest, fair and upbeat!

I had a family emergency. This office took care of me like I was family. I broke a tooth. I was in pain. I called up. They took me the same day. They did a crown prep the very next day. They had a crown and installed it I just could not get over all the help that they gave me what I recommend these people to anyone else you bet your life I would.

Most digital scans can be completed quickly, often within just a few minutes depending on the procedure and the number of teeth being scanned.

No. Intra-oral scanners and dental X-rays provide different types of information. Digital scans show the visible surfaces and shapes of teeth, while X-rays allow Dr. Nelson to evaluate areas below the surface, including roots, bone, and hidden dental concerns.
