What Are Retainers?

Retainers are custom-made orthodontic appliances designed to keep teeth in their new positions after braces or clear aligner treatment. Once teeth have been straightened, they naturally tend to shift back toward their original positions without proper retention. Wearing a retainer as recommended helps maintain the results of orthodontic treatment while allowing the surrounding bone and tissues to stabilize. At Cape Coral Dentistry, Dr. Wesley Nelson provides custom retainers that are comfortable, durable, and precisely fitted to each patient’s smile. Whether you’ve recently completed orthodontic treatment or need a replacement for a lost or damaged retainer, Dr. Nelson works with patients to protect their investment and keep their smiles beautifully aligned for years to come.

Prevents Teeth from Shifting

After orthodontic treatment, teeth naturally have a tendency to move as the surrounding bone and soft tissues continue to adapt. This process, known as orthodontic relapse, can gradually change the alignment achieved through braces or clear aligners. Wearing a custom retainer as directed by Dr. Wesley Nelson helps hold teeth in their corrected positions, allowing the smile to remain straight and stable over time. Consistent retainer use protects the results of orthodontic treatment and helps prevent unwanted movement that could affect your bite, appearance, and confidence.

Protects Your Orthodontic Investment

Orthodontic treatment requires a significant investment of time, commitment, and resources to achieve a healthier, straighter smile. Retainers play an essential role in protecting that investment by maintaining the alignment created during treatment and reducing the chance that teeth will shift enough to require additional orthodontic correction. By following a personalized retainer schedule from Cape Coral Dentistry, patients can help preserve their results and continue enjoying the benefits of their orthodontic treatment for many years.

Supports Long-Term Oral Health

Properly aligned teeth are generally easier to brush, floss, and maintain, reducing areas where plaque, bacteria, and food particles can become trapped. Retainers help preserve a balanced bite and stable tooth positioning, which can support healthier gums, improved chewing function, and better overall oral hygiene. By maintaining the alignment of your smile, a retainer becomes an important part of your long-term dental care routine and helps protect your oral health well beyond the completion of orthodontic treatment.

I highly recommend this dental office! I’ve been going here for many years and have never been disappointed! They are a small private practice so they really get to know you (they literally ask how my dog is doing by name) and you feel comfortable the second you walk in the door. Everyone is so friendly and professional, from reception to the dental hygienists to the doctor and his assistants! Always very honest, fair and upbeat!

I had a family emergency. This office took care of me like I was family. I broke a tooth. I was in pain. I called up. They took me the same day. They did a crown prep the very next day. They had a crown and installed it I just could not get over all the help that they gave me what I recommend these people to anyone else you bet your life I would.

Questions Cape Coral
Dental Patients Ask

The length of time depends on your individual orthodontic treatment and our dentist’s recommendations. Many patients wear their retainers full-time initially and then transition to nighttime wear. Because teeth naturally shift throughout life, many patients benefit from wearing their retainers indefinitely while sleeping.

Without regular retainer use, teeth can gradually move back toward their original positions. Even small shifts can affect your bite and smile, potentially requiring additional orthodontic treatment to correct the changes.

Yes. If your retainer has been lost, cracked, or no longer fits properly, Dr. Wesley Nelson can evaluate your teeth and fabricate a new custom retainer. Replacing it promptly helps prevent unwanted tooth movement.

Retainers should be cleaned daily using a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water or a retainer-specific cleaning solution. Avoid hot water, as excessive heat can warp the appliance and affect its fit.

Yes. Custom retainers are designed to fit snugly and comfortably over your teeth. Most patients adjust to wearing them within a few days, and after the initial adjustment period, many barely notice they are wearing their retainer.
